Types of Marriages in Aruba

Aruba legally recognizes civil marriages, and also allows for religious and symbolic ceremonies, especially for tourists. However, only civil marriages performed at the Civil Registry Office are legally binding under Aruban law.

1. Civil Marriage (Legal & Official)

  • The only type of marriage that is legally recognized in Aruba.
  • Must be performed at the Censo (Civil Registry Office) in Oranjestad.
  • Open to:
    • Aruban citizens
    • Foreigners (must meet document requirements)
  • Same-sex civil marriage is not yet legal, but civil unions may be recognized for limited rights.

Requirements include:

  • Valid passports or ID
  • Birth certificates
  • Proof of unmarried status (if applicable)
  • Two witnesses (18+)
  • Translated/legalized documents for non-Dutch/English speakers

2. Religious Marriage (Ceremonial Only)

  • Churches can perform weddings (Catholic, Protestant, etc.)
  • Not legally binding unless preceded by a civil ceremony
  • Most common for residents who want both legal and spiritual unions

3. Symbolic / Destination Weddings

  • Popular among tourists and foreign couples
  • Conducted by a celebrant or planner on beaches, resorts, or other venues
  • Not legally valid unless followed by a civil ceremony
  • No documentation required for symbolic weddings

4. Same-Sex Relationships

  • Same-sex marriage is not legally recognized in Aruba, but:
    • Registered partnerships may offer limited rights
    • Aruba must recognize same-sex marriages legally performed in the Netherlands, based on court rulings and Kingdom law

5. Common-Law / Cohabitation

  • Informal cohabitation is common, but does not carry the same legal status as marriage
  • Couples may sign cohabitation agreements for shared property or children
