The Bahamas is a stunning archipelago of approximately 700 islands and over 2,000 cays located in the Atlantic Ocean, southeast of Florida and north of Cuba. Renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, white and pink sand beaches, and vibrant marine life, it stands as one of the world’s premier travel destinations.

Quick Facts

  • Capital: Nassau (situated on New Providence Island)
  • Population: Approximately 413,400 (2025 estimate)
  • Official Language: English
  • Currency: Bahamian Dollar (BSD), pegged 1:1 with the U.S. Dollar
  • Government: Parliamentary democracy within the Commonwealth; gained independence from the UK in 1973
  • Climate: Semi-tropical, with temperatures typically ranging from 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C)

Geography & Nature

While the Bahamas comprises around 700 islands, only about 30 are inhabited. New Providence Island, home to the capital Nassau, houses approximately 70% of the nation’s population. Other notable islands include Grand Bahama, Eleuthera, Exuma, and Andros. The islands boast diverse ecosystems, from lush mangroves and pine forests to vibrant coral reefs and blue holes.

Travel & Tourism

Tourism is a cornerstone of the Bahamian economy, accounting for about 45% of the national GDP. In 2024, the Bahamas welcomed over 11.22 million visitors, with approximately 85% coming from the United States. Cruise tourism plays a significant role, with 7.8 million cruise passengers arriving in 2023.

Popular destinations include:

  • Nassau: The bustling capital offering a mix of history, culture, and modern amenities.
  • Paradise Island: Home to the renowned Atlantis Resort.
  • Exumas: Famous for its clear waters and swimming pigs.
  • Harbour Island: Known for its pink sand beaches.
  • Andros: Offers vast mangroves and the world’s third-largest barrier reef.

Travel Advisory

As of March 31, 2025, the U.S. Department of State has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for the Bahamas, advising travelers to exercise increased caution due to crime. Incidents such as armed robberies, burglaries, and sexual assaults have been reported, particularly in areas like Nassau and Freeport. Visitors are also cautioned about potential risks associated with water activities, including jet skiing and boating, due to lax safety regulations.

Cultural Highlights

Beyond its natural beauty, the Bahamas boasts a rich cultural heritage. The National Art Gallery of the Bahamas in Nassau showcases works by prominent Bahamian artists, including rising female talents like Giovanna Swaby, Sydney Colby, and April Bay.

Featured Resort: Baha Mar

Located in Nassau, Baha Mar is the world’s largest beach resort, encompassing three hotels with a total of 2,200 rooms. The resort features a 15-acre waterpark, a private island, a 24-room spa, and a casino with over 1,100 slot machines. Guests can enjoy a variety of dining options, wildlife experiences, and luxury amenities.
