Natural Disasters in Martinique

Martinique, located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, is vulnerable to several natural hazards due to its tropical climate and volcanic origin. These include volcanoes, hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes.

1. Volcanic Eruption

  • Main Threat: Mount Pelée (in the north)
  • It is an active stratovolcano and the most dangerous natural hazard on the island.
  • Famous eruption in 1902 destroyed Saint-Pierre and killed ~30,000 people in minutes.
  • Monitored by the Observatoire Volcanologique et Sismologique de Martinique.
  • Last minor activity: 2020–2021 (earthquakes and gas emissions).

2. Hurricanes and Tropical Storms

  • Season: June to November (peak August–October)
  • Martinique is located in the Atlantic hurricane belt.
  • Major hurricanes affecting the island:
    • Hurricane Dean (2007)
    • Hurricane Maria (2017 – indirect impacts)
  • Dangers include:
    • High winds
    • Coastal flooding and storm surges
    • Landslides
    • Infrastructure damage

3. Flooding

  • Often caused by:
    • Heavy tropical rains
    • Overflowing rivers and mountain streams
  • Urban areas and steep terrain in the north are especially vulnerable
  • Flash floods can disrupt roads and villages

4. Earthquakes

  • Martinique lies in a seismically active zone
  • Most are minor, but moderate earthquakes occur occasionally
  • Risk of tsunami from regional quakes exists (especially from nearby undersea faults)

5. Landslides (Mudslides)

  • Triggered by:
    • Volcanic slopes
    • Heavy rain, especially during the wet season
  • Areas near Mount Pelée and forested mountains are most prone

6. Tsunami (Low Risk but Possible)

  • No major tsunami in recent history
  • Risk comes from earthquakes or volcanic activity in nearby regions (e.g., Lesser Antilles or South America)

Disaster Preparedness

Martinique is equipped with:

  • Volcano and seismic monitoring systems
  • Cyclone shelters
  • Emergency alerts (text, radio, sirens)
  • Building codes designed for hurricanes and earthquakes
