In the Cayman Islands, marriage is regulated under the Marriage Law (2020 Revision). Here are the main types of marriage recognized in the Cayman Islands:

  1. Civil Marriage

Performed by: A civil registrar or Marriage Officer (authorized official).

Location: Can take place at the Registrar’s office or an approved location (including beaches, resorts, etc.).

Requirements:

Both parties must be over 18 (or 16+ with parental consent).

A valid non-impediment certificate (stating you’re free to marry).

Passport or other valid ID.

Notice of marriage and marriage license (obtained through the General Registry).

Two witnesses present at the ceremony.

  1. Religious Marriage

Performed by: A recognized Marriage Officer (such as a minister or priest) affiliated with a registered religious organization.

Location: At a place of worship or another location approved by the Marriage Officer.

Requirements: Similar to civil marriage (license, IDs, witnesses, etc.).

  1. Customary/Traditional Marriages

Status: Not legally recognized under Cayman Islands law.

If someone undergoes a traditional or cultural marriage ceremony (without legal registration or license), it won’t be legally binding unless followed by a civil or religious legal marriage.

  1. Same-Sex Marriage

Status: Not recognized.

The Cayman Islands does not allow same-sex marriages, but it recognizes civil partnerships under the Civil Partnership Law, 2020, which grants many of the same legal rights as marriage.

  1. Destination Weddings (for non-residents)

Popular among tourists due to the island’s beauty.

Legal for foreigners as long as they meet the documentation and notice period requirements.

Requires a special marriage license.
