Here are some of Montserrat’s most notable figures across entertainment, sports, literature, and public service:


Music & Entertainment

  • Alphonsus “Arrow” Cassell — Internationally acclaimed soca artist best known for the smash hit “Hot Hot Hot,” which sold more than 4 million copies
  • Maizie Williams — Born on Montserrat, she rose to fame as a member of the 1970s disco group Boney M, touring worldwide

Literature & Arts

  • Sir Howard A. Fergus (1937–2023) — Esteemed academic, poet, and historian; authored the lyrics for Montserrat’s national song “Motherland.” He was honored with a knighthood (KBE) and served as acting governor
  • Edgar Nkosi White (b. 1947) — Prolific playwright and novelist; his works like Lament for Rastafari and I Marcus Garvey have gained international recognition
  • E. A. Markham (Archie Markham) — Acclaimed poet and author who chronicled Montserrat’s volcanic eruptions and island life
  • Chadd Cumberbatch — Awarded OBE, this visual/performance artist has written plays and poetry capturing Montserrat’s resilience after the Soufrière Hills eruption

Sports & Performance

  • Lionel Baker — First Montserratian to play Test cricket for the West Indies
  • Jim Allen — Former cricketer who represented the World Series Cricket West Indians
  • Lyle & Rowan Taylor — Professional footballers representing Montserrat in international matches

  • Angela Yee — American radio personality of Montserratian descent, best known as co-host of The Breakfast Club
  • Yvonne Weekes — British–Montserratian writer, theater director, and educator whose work on displacement and resilience (Volcano, Nomad) has earned critical acclaim

  • Dame Bernice Lake — Historic Eastern Caribbean attorney and the first woman Queen’s Counsel from Montserrat
  • Jennette Arnold — First Montserratian elected to the Greater London Assembly, serving multiple terms
  • Donaldson Romeo — Former Premier (2014–2019), journalist, artist, and current Legislative Assembly member .
