Transportation System in Guadeloupe (2025 Overview)

Guadeloupe’s transportation system includes road networks, ferries, buses, and air transport, but lacks a rail system. Being an archipelago (mainland + smaller islands), inter-island connections are crucial. The system is a mix of modern infrastructure and challenges in rural access and public mobility.

1. Road Network

  • Well-developed in urban zones like Pointe-à-Pitre, Basse-Terre, Les Abymes, and Le Gosier.
  • Highways connect Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre via bridges.
  • National Roads (Routes Nationales – RN) link major towns.
  • Local roads can be narrow or steep, especially in mountainous Basse-Terre.

Common Vehicles

  • Small cars, SUVs, vans, and scooters dominate.
  • Used vehicles from France are popular.
  • Right-hand drive; traffic moves on the right side.

2. Public Transport

Buses (Karulis)

  • Main public transport service, especially in urban areas.
  • Operated by Karulis, covering:
    • Pointe-à-Pitre
    • Les Abymes
    • Baie-Mahault
    • Le Gosier

Frequency: Runs every 30–60 minutes depending on time/day.
Fare: ~€1.20–€2.50 per ride.
Karulis app provides real-time bus schedules and routes.

Private Mini-buses (Taxi Collectifs)

  • Widely used in rural areas and towns with poor bus access.
  • Flexible stops; cost slightly higher than buses.
  • Often labeled with a “TC” sign on the windshield.

3. Ferry & Maritime Transport

Essential for travel between islands:

  • Marie-Galante
  • Les Saintes
  • La Désirade
  • Petite-Terre

Ferry Operators

  • CTM Deher
  • Express des Îles
  • Val’Ferry

Duration Example:

  • Pointe-à-Pitre → Terre-de-Haut (Les Saintes): ~1 hour
  • Saint-François → La Désirade: ~45 minutes

4. Air Transport

Main Airport:

  • Pôle Caraïbes International Airport (PTP) – Pointe-à-Pitre
    • Domestic and international flights.
    • Daily flights to/from Paris, French Antilles, and regional islands.

Regional Airports:

  • Marie-Galante (TFFM)
  • Les Saintes (TFFS)
  • La Désirade (TFFA)

5. Taxi Services

  • Widely available in cities and airports.
  • No ride-sharing services like Uber/Lyft (as of 2025).
  • Fares can be high; often fixed rates from the airport to towns.

6. Cycling & Walking

  • Biking is common in coastal towns.
  • Not widespread in mountainous areas.
  • Infrastructure for bikes is limited, but improving in urban centers.

7. Challenges

  • Limited public transport coverage in rural areas.
  • Traffic congestion in Pointe-à-Pitre and Baie-Mahault during peak hours.
  • Few late-night or weekend bus services.
  • No railways at all.

Summary
