Saint Kitts and Nevis does not have a major oil refinery. Here’s a clear breakdown of the country’s situation regarding oil refining and energy:

Oil Refining in Saint Kitts and Nevis

  • There is no functioning oil refinery in Saint Kitts and Nevis.
  • The country imports all of its refined petroleum products, such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.
  • Fuels are primarily used for:
    • Power generation
    • Transportation
    • Commercial and domestic use

Energy Infrastructure Overview

  • Electricity is mainly generated using diesel-powered generators.
  • There is an ongoing national effort to shift toward renewable energy, especially solar, wind, and geothermal.

Renewable Energy Plans

  • The government is working with international partners to:
    • Increase solar energy capacity (including solar farms)
    • Explore geothermal potential on Nevis (Nevis is volcanically active)
    • Promote energy efficiency and sustainability

Past Regional Partnership: PetroCaribe

  • In the past, Saint Kitts and Nevis was part of PetroCaribe, a Venezuelan initiative that provided oil to Caribbean nations under favorable terms.
  • This helped with fuel supply but did not involve refining in Saint Kitts or Nevis.

Fuel Import & Storage Facilities

  • Imported fuel is received via seaports and stored at fuel terminals, mainly located on St. Kitts.
  • Key fuel storage and distribution is handled by companies such as:
    • Delta Petroleum
    • SOL EC Ltd.
    • Rubis Caribbean

Summary:

  • No oil refinery exists in Saint Kitts and Nevis.
  • All fuel is imported and stored/distributed locally.
  • Focus is shifting to renewables like solar and geothermal for energy independence.
