Montserrat’s healthcare system is small but functional, providing basic public health services to the island’s population. While advanced medical care is limited, the government prioritizes primary care, maternal and child health, and managing chronic diseases.

Overview of Healthcare in Montserrat

Main Healthcare Facility

  • Glendon Hospital (in St. John’s)
    • The island’s only public hospital
    • Provides inpatient, outpatient, emergency, maternity, and surgical services
    • Also hosts lab services, pharmacy, and radiology
    • A new hospital is currently under development to replace the aging Glendon facility

Other Health Services

  • Community health clinics in several districts (e.g., Salem, Cudjoe Head, Davy Hill)
  • Dental clinic, optical care, and rehabilitation services are available
  • Environmental health and vector control programs
  • Mental health services: limited but accessible through referrals

Healthcare Workforce

  • Includes doctors, nurses, pharmacists, midwives, and visiting specialists
  • Montserrat sometimes relies on visiting doctors or regional partnerships (e.g., via the Caribbean Public Health Agency – CARPHA)
  • Telemedicine is being explored to bridge gaps in specialist care

Health Priorities

  1. Chronic disease management (diabetes, hypertension, heart disease)
  2. Maternal and child health
  3. Immunization programs (high coverage for childhood vaccines)
  4. Infectious disease control (e.g., dengue, COVID-19)
  5. Health education and community outreach

Public vs Private Healthcare

  • Healthcare is largely government-funded and free or low-cost for residents
  • Private care is limited; most residents use the public system
  • For specialized or emergency care, patients are often referred to:
    • Antigua, Barbados, or the UK

Health Challenges

  • Small medical workforce
  • Limited specialty care and diagnostic facilities
  • Aging population
  • Import dependence for medications and equipment

Health Insurance

  • Government employees typically have coverage
  • Some private insurance options exist, but many residents pay out of pocket
  • Montserrat is exploring universal health coverage options
