To become a citizen of any of the islands in the former Netherlands Antilles (Curaçao, Bonaire, Sint Maarten, Saba, or Sint Eustatius), you must acquire Dutch citizenship, as these islands are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The process depends on whether you qualify by birth, descent, naturalization, or option procedure.
How to Become a Citizen (Dutch Nationality)
There are three main pathways:
By Birth or Descent
You automatically acquire Dutch citizenship if:
- You were born to at least one Dutch parent (regardless of where).
- You were born in the Netherlands Antilles before October 10, 2010, and one parent was a Dutch citizen.
No action required if already registered properly.
By Naturalization
This is the most common route for immigrants.
Requirements:
- You are 18 years or older
- You have legally lived in:
- Curaçao, Sint Maarten, or Aruba for at least 5 years OR
- Bonaire, Saba, or Sint Eustatius (BES islands) for 5 years
- You have a permanent residence permit
- You can speak basic Dutch or Papiamentu
- You are not a security risk
- You renounce your previous citizenship (with exceptions)
Documents Typically Required:
- Birth certificate
- Passport
- Residence permit
- Proof of integration (language test, etc.)
- Police clearance
Application is made at:
- Immigration office on your island (e.g., IND Curaçao, IND Caribbean Netherlands for BES islands)
By Option Procedure (Easier/Faster)
This is a simpler and quicker process for people in special categories, such as:
- Long-term residents born and raised on the island
- Former Dutch citizens
- Spouses of Dutch citizens (after 3 years of marriage and living together)
- Children born stateless on the island
Usually processed in 3–6 months
Requires fewer documents and no language test
After Becoming a Citizen
Once approved, you must:
- Attend a naturalization ceremony
- Swear an oath of allegiance
- Apply for a Dutch passport
Island-Specific Notes
Island | Legal Status | Citizenship Route |
---|---|---|
Curaçao & Sint Maarten | Autonomous countries within the Kingdom | Dutch citizenship applies |
Bonaire, Saba, Statia | Special municipalities of the Netherlands | Dutch citizenship directly applies |
Important Notes
- You cannot become a citizen just by marriage—you must also meet residency and integration requirements.
- If your child is born on the island, it does not automatically make them a citizen unless a parent is Dutch.
- Dutch nationality laws are strict and may require renouncing your original citizenship unless exempt.
