Guyana is home to a diverse range of fish species due to its vast network of rivers, creeks, wetlands, and coastal waters. The country has both freshwater and saltwater fish, supporting local diets, sport fishing, and small-scale commercial industries.


Types of Fish Found in Guyana

Freshwater Fish (Inland Rivers & Lakes)

  1. Lukanani (Peacock Bass) – prized for sport and eating
  2. Hassar (Armored Catfish) – popular in local pepperpot dishes
  3. Pakoo – another armored fish, often curried
  4. Piranha (called Pirai locally) – sharp-toothed and aggressive
  5. Lau-Lau (Giant Catfish) – among the largest fish in Guyanese rivers
  6. Cuirass (Armored fish) – eaten fried or curried
  7. Tambaqui (Black Pacu) – fruit-eating, large and meaty
  8. Silver Hatchetfish – small and found in streams
  9. Arapaima (Pirarucu) – one of the world’s largest freshwater fish (protected species)
  10. Electric Eel – found in deep jungle waters

Marine (Saltwater & Coastal) Fish

  1. Snapper – red, gray, and lane snapper species
  2. Bangamary – white, flaky meat; very popular
  3. Gilbaka – firm, tasty white fish often fried or curried
  4. Cuffum – coastal reef fish
  5. Butterfish – tender and flavorful
  6. Salmon (local variety, not the Atlantic salmon) – popular for stews
  7. Catfish – various coastal species
  8. Grunt – caught near the shore
  9. Shark – small coastal types used in soups or stews
  10. Mackerel – seasonal and oily

Fisheries & Cultural Use

  • Fish is central to Guyanese cuisine, especially in pepperpot, fry rice, curry, and grill dishes.
  • Local fishing is done with nets, lines, and canoes, especially in Amerindian communities.
