In Guadeloupe, the salary structure follows the French national system, since it is an overseas department of France. This means wages, employment laws, and public sector salaries are generally aligned with those in mainland France, although there are regional allowances due to the overseas status and cost of living differences.

General Salary Structure in Guadeloupe

1. Minimum Wage (SMIC)

  • As of 2025, the gross monthly minimum wage in France and Guadeloupe is approximately €1,766 (about €1,398 net) for a 35-hour work week.
  • Hourly gross wage: €11.65
  • Many workers in agriculture, domestic services, and tourism earn close to this amount.

2. Public Sector Salaries

  • Governed by the French civil service scale (Grille indiciaire).
  • Public employees receive:
    • Base salary (based on grade and step)
    • Overseas allowance (20%–40% of base)
    • Additional bonuses depending on position and seniority

Hospital Nurse€2,200 – €3,000

3. Private Sector Salaries

  • Based on industry, experience, and qualification.
  • Wages may be higher than mainland France in some sectors to account for living costs.

Retail Manager€2,000 – €3,000
Agricultural Worker€1,500 – €1,800

4. Self-Employment and Informal Sector

  • Many people in Guadeloupe work in informal trades (crafts, market selling, fishing).
  • Earnings vary widely and are often not taxed unless registered under a business regime like micro-entrepreneur.

5. Allowances & Benefits

Employees may also receive:

  • Housing allowance (CAF)
  • Family benefits
  • Unemployment benefits (Pôle Emploi)
  • Transport & meal subsidies

6. Challenges

  • Unemployment rate is relatively high (~19–22%).
  • Many jobs are seasonal (tourism, agriculture).
  • Public employment is a major source of stable income.
