In The Bahamas, there are two main types of legally recognized marriages under the Marriage Act:

  1. Civil Marriage

Performed by: A licensed Marriage Officer (often a Registrar or Magistrate).

Location: Can take place at a government office or approved venue.

Legal Requirements:

Marriage license required (valid for 90 days).

Both parties must be present and over 18 (or have parental consent if under).

Witnesses: Two witnesses must be present.

Often used by: Residents and visitors/tourists.

  1. Religious Marriage

Performed by: A recognized religious official (e.g., pastor, priest, imam) who is also licensed as a Marriage Officer.

Location: Usually in a church, mosque, or other religious venue.

Legal Requirements:

Same as for civil marriage, including the license and witnesses.

Valid in law if officiated by a licensed religious Marriage Officer.

Additional Notes:

Common-law unions (cohabitation without legal marriage) are not legally recognized as marriage in The Bahamas.

Same-sex marriage is not currently legal in The Bahamas.

Destination weddings are popular; foreign nationals can marry in The Bahamas if they meet the legal requirements.
