South Sudan, despite its young age as a nation and history of conflict, has produced several famous and inspirational celebrities who have gained international recognition in various fields such as fashion, activism, sports, and music. Here are some notable names:


1. Alek Wek – Supermodel & Humanitarian

  • Born in Wau, South Sudan (then Sudan).
  • One of the first African models to achieve international fame.
  • Has worked with top fashion houses like Chanel, Christian Dior, and Valentino.
  • Known for breaking traditional beauty standards in the fashion world.
  • A strong advocate for refugees and human rights, especially through her work with UNHCR.

2. Emmanuel Jal – Musician & Former Child Soldier

  • Former child soldier turned peace activist and hip-hop artist.
  • Uses music to tell his story and promote peace, unity, and healing.
  • Famous for songs like “War Child”, which is also the title of his autobiography and documentary.
  • Performs globally and collaborates with artists and humanitarian organizations.

3. Nyakim Gatwech – Model & Social Media Personality

  • South Sudanese-American model known as the “Queen of Dark” due to her rich, dark skin tone.

  • Born in what is now South Sudan.
