The naval force of The Bahamas is known as the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF). It is the primary military and maritime law enforcement agency in the country—essentially serving as both the navy and coast guard.

Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF)

Established: 1980

Headquarters: Coral Harbour Base, New Providence

Commander-in-Chief: The Governor-General (on behalf of the Bahamian monarch)

Core Missions of the RBDF

  1. Protecting Bahamian territorial waters
  2. Preventing illegal migration and human trafficking
  3. Combating drug smuggling and maritime crime
  4. Disaster relief and humanitarian response
  5. Search and rescue operations
  6. Environmental protection (e.g., illegal fishing)

Fleet and Equipment

The RBDF operates a modest but capable fleet of vessels, including:

  • Patrol craft (such as the HMBS Nassau, HMBS Bahamas, and HMBS Lawrence Major)
  • Interceptor boats for high-speed pursuits
  • Support vessels for logistics and transport

The force has also started using drones and surveillance technology to improve maritime monitoring.

Structure and Personnel

  • Divided into several branches:
    • Commodore’s Office
    • Operations Command
    • Administration and Logistics
    • Training Department
  • The RBDF also includes:
    • Military Police
    • Coast Guard divisions
    • Air Wing (limited aerial support with plans to expand)

Regional and International Cooperation

  • Works with the United States Coast Guard, CARICOM, and INTERPOL.
  • Participates in joint operations and training to strengthen Caribbean maritime security.

Training and Recruitment

  • Recruits undergo basic military and naval training at Coral Harbour Base.
  • Advanced training often occurs through partnerships with the U.S., U.K., and Canadian armed forces.
