MILITARY IN BELIZE

Belize has a small but structured military force known as the Belize Defence Force (BDF). The military is primarily responsible for territorial defense, internal security, disaster response, and counter-narcotics operations, especially given the country’s proximity to organized criminal routes in Central America.


1. Overview: Belize Defence Force (BDF)

  • BDF often trains with British, U.S., and Canadian forces.

3. Belize Coast Guard

  • Established in 2005 as a separate military branch.
  • Responsible for:
    • Maritime security
    • Anti-smuggling patrols
    • Search and rescue (SAR)
    • Environmental protection

Fleet:

  • Patrol boats, interceptors, and coastal surveillance systems.

  • United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM)
  • British Royal Navy
  • Mexico Navy

4. Belize Air Wing (BDF Air Wing)

  • Small aviation unit under the BDF.
  • Used for:
    • Reconnaissance
    • Transport
    • Medical evacuations
    • Surveillance of illegal activities

Aircraft:

  • Light fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters (some donated by allies).

5. Reserve Units

  • The Volunteer Battalion acts as a reserve force.
  • Called upon during emergencies or for special assignments.

6. International Military Cooperation

Belize works closely with:

  • United Kingdom – Historically trained Belizean forces; maintains small advisory presence.
  • United States – Provides equipment, training, and military aid.
  • Mexico and Guatemala – Joint patrols and communication to prevent border conflicts.
  • CARICOM – Participates in regional security initiatives like RSS (Regional Security System).

7. Key Security Challenges

  • Guatemalan border dispute – Ongoing issue involving illegal logging, poaching, and border intrusions.
  • Drug trafficking – Belize is a transit route; military supports police in interdictions.
  • Gang violence – Military assists with urban patrols in Belize City.
  • Natural disasters – BDF plays a vital role in disaster response and recovery.
