Mia Amor Mottley has been serving as the Prime Minister of Barbados since May 25, 2018, marking a historic milestone as the nation’s first female leader. She is also the leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP). Under her leadership, the BLP achieved unprecedented victories in both the 2018 and 2022 general elections, securing all 30 seats in the House of Assembly on both occasions.
Born on October 1, 1965, Mottley has dedicated nearly three decades to public service. Her political career commenced in 1991 when she was appointed as one of two Opposition Senators. In 1994, she was elected to the House of Assembly, representing the constituency of St. Michael North East. Throughout her tenure, Mottley has held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Education, Youth Affairs and Culture, Attorney General, and Deputy Prime Minister.
In addition to her national roles, Mottley has been an influential figure on the international stage. She has been a vocal advocate for climate change action, representing the interests of Small Island Developing States. Her leadership was instrumental in Barbados’s transition to a republic on November 30, 2021, when the nation removed Queen Elizabeth II as head of state and inaugurated Dame Sandra Mason as its first president.
Mottley continues to serve as Prime Minister, focusing on issues such as economic development, climate resilience, and social equity for Barbados.
