Major Industries in Honduras

Honduras has a diversified economy with key industries in agriculture, manufacturing, mining, and tourism.


1. Agriculture & Agro-Processing

  • Bananas – historically called the “banana republic” due to dependence on exports
  • Coffee – one of the top export products, especially specialty coffee
  • Palm oil – produced along the Caribbean coast
  • Sugarcane, melons, and shrimp – significant exports
  • Agro-processing for both domestic consumption and export markets

2. Textile & Apparel Manufacturing (Maquila Sector)

  • Large garment assembly plants export clothing mainly to the United States under CAFTA-DR trade agreement
  • Employs tens of thousands of workers, mostly women
  • Key products: T-shirts, sportswear, denim, and uniforms

3. Mining

  • Gold, silver, zinc, lead, and antimony
  • Mining concessions mostly in rural mountainous regions
  • Foreign companies involved in extraction, often controversial due to environmental concerns

4. Tourism

  • Focus on the Bay Islands (Roatán, Utila, Guanaja) for diving and beaches
  • Mayan ruins in Copán attract history enthusiasts
  • Ecotourism in national parks and rainforests (e.g., Pico Bonito, Río Plátano)

5. Energy & Utilities

  • Hydroelectric power is the main electricity source
  • Expansion in solar and wind energy projects
  • Oil products are imported, mainly for transport and industry

6. Logistics & Port Services

  • Puerto Cortés is a major Central American shipping hub
  • Warehousing and cargo handling industries are growing
