Tunisia does not have a monarch — it is a republic.

Government System in Tunisia

  • Type: Unitary semi-presidential republic
  • Head of State: The President (currently Kais Saied as of 2025)
  • Head of Government: The Prime Minister (currently Sarra Zaafrani Zenzri)
  • No king or royal family – Tunisia abolished monarchy in 1957.

A Bit of History

  • Tunisia was previously a monarchy under the Husainid Dynasty, which ruled from 1705 to 1957.
  • The last Bey (monarch) was Muhammad VIII al-Amin.
  • On July 25, 1957, the monarchy was abolished, and Tunisia became a republic with Habib Bourguiba as its first president.
