Freedom, Georgia, a community founded in 2020.

In the wake of racial unrest in the U.S., 19 Black families came together to purchase nearly 97 acres of land in Wilkinson County, Georgia, with the vision of creating a safe, self-sustaining, pro-Black community.

The founders, led by Ashley Scott and Renee Walters, wanted to build a space where Black people could live without fear of systemic racism and violence. Their long-term plan included developing housing, businesses, and recreational spaces, while also emphasizing farming, sustainability, and cooperative economics.

This project gained national and international attention because it echoed historical efforts like Black Wall Street (Tulsa, Oklahoma) and Freedom colonies that were built by freed African Americans after emancipation.
