Climate of the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands enjoy a tropical marine climate, meaning the weather is generally warm and sunny all year round, with distinct wet and dry seasons. The islands’ climate is strongly influenced by the surrounding Caribbean Sea and the northeast trade winds.

1. Temperature

  • Average Year-Round Temperature: 24°C to 31°C (75°F to 88°F)
  • Warmest Months: June to September (often reaching 32°C / 90°F)
  • Coolest Months: December to February (average low around 23°C / 73°F)

Note: Even in the “cool” months, it’s still warm and pleasant by most standards.

2. Seasons

Dry Season (Winter/Spring)

  • Duration: Mid-November to April
  • Weather: Sunny, lower humidity, comfortable breeze
  • Tourist Peak Season: Yes
  • Ideal for:
    • Beach holidays
    • Outdoor events
    • Water sports

Wet Season (Summer/Fall)

  • Duration: May to October
  • Weather: Hotter, more humid, frequent short afternoon rain showers
  • Heavy rainfall between September and October
  • Often includes thunderstorms, but rarely all-day rain
  • Still many sunny mornings and evenings

3. Hurricane Season

  • Official Period: June 1 to November 30
  • Peak Risk: August to October
  • While not hit every year, the Cayman Islands are in the Caribbean hurricane belt.
  • Major hurricane: Hurricane Ivan in 2004 caused severe damage, but the islands have since strengthened building codes and infrastructure.

4. Rainfall

  • Annual average: ~45–60 inches (1,100 to 1,500 mm), mostly during wet season.
  • Heaviest rainfall: September and October.
  • Rain usually comes in brief, intense showers followed by sun.

5. Winds & Breezes

  • Dominated by the northeast trade winds, especially in the dry season.
  • Provide cooling breezes that reduce the discomfort of high humidity.
