Beauty pageants were a culturally significant part of life in the former Netherlands Antilles, especially in Curaçao and Sint Maarten, and continue to thrive today under the individual islands. These pageants often serve as platforms for tourism, cultural pride, and international representation.

Miss Curaçao

  • Most prominent pageant in the former Netherlands Antilles.
  • Sends representatives to:
    • Miss Universe
    • Miss World
    • Miss Earth
    • Miss Supranational

Notable winners:

  • Anne Marie Braafheid (1st runner-up Miss Universe 1968) – First Black woman to place that high in the pageant’s history.
  • Curaçao is well-known internationally for its strong pageant presence.

Miss Sint Maarten

  • Local pageant that selects candidates for:
    • Regional Caribbean pageants
    • Occasionally Miss World Caribbean and smaller international competitions.
  • Often linked with Carnival Queen contests.

Miss Bonaire

  • Smaller in scale, but selects representatives for:
    • Miss Earth
    • Miss International (occasionally)
  • Focuses on eco-awareness, culture, and tourism promotion.

Miss Saba and Miss Sint Eustatius

  • Beauty pageants are held occasionally or during cultural festivals, often with Carnival or national celebrations.
  • Titles include:
    • Miss Saba Queen
    • Miss Statia Carnival Queen

These are more local in scope but have great community impact.

Common Themes in Netherlands Antilles Pageants

  • Cultural Representation: Traditional dress, music, and local history.
  • Tourism Promotion: Winners often serve as ambassadors for their island.
  • Education & Empowerment: Many pageants focus on youth development, self-confidence, and advocacy.
