Rooted in the 19th-century traditions of Afro-Brazilian returnees, the carnival showcases a fusion of Nigerian, Brazilian, and Cuban cultures through music, dance, and elaborate costumes.

Cultural Significance:
The term “Fanti” derives from the Portuguese word fantasia, meaning masquerade or costume. The carnival originated in the late 19th century, initiated by Afro-Brazilian returnees of Yoruba descent. These returnees established the Brazilian quarters of Lagos Island, including Campos and Isale Eko, infusing the area with a vibrant Afro-Brazilian culture expressed through samba rhythms, elaborate costumes, Catholic influences, and street performances.
Revival and Modernization:
After experiencing a decline due to urban modernization and reduced participation, the Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the Brazilian Descendants Association and young creatives, is reviving the carnival. This revival aims to reimagine the celebration, making it relevant for tourism development, cultural preservation, youth engagement, and community revitalization.
