The Lagos Fanti Carnival, also known as the Caretta Carnival, is a vibrant celebration of Afro-Brazilian heritage and one of West Africa’s most significant cultural festivals. Rooted in the 19th-century traditions of Afro-Brazilian returnees, the carnival showcases a fusion of Nigerian, Brazilian, and Cuban cultures through music, dance, and elaborate costumes.

2025 Carnival Details:

  • Date & Time: Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Location: Remembrance Arcade, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos Island.
  • Highlights: The event will feature street parades, live storytelling, music, fashion, and intergenerational performances, celebrating the city’s Afro-Brazilian history.

Cultural Significance:

The term “Fanti” derives from the Portuguese word fantasia, meaning masquerade or costume. The carnival originated in the late 19th century, initiated by Afro-Brazilian returnees of Yoruba descent. These returnees established the Brazilian quarters of Lagos Island, including Campos and Isale Eko, infusing the area with a vibrant Afro-Brazilian culture expressed through samba rhythms, elaborate costumes, Catholic influences, and street performances.

Revival and Modernization:

After experiencing a decline due to urban modernization and reduced participation, the Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the Brazilian Descendants Association and young creatives, is reviving the carnival. This revival aims to reimagine the celebration, making it relevant for tourism development, cultural preservation, youth engagement, and community revitalization.

Community Engagement:

In the lead-up to the carnival, local communities are actively preparing through rehearsals, costume-making, and vibrant gatherings, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of Lagos.
