The Alake of Egbaland is the paramount ruler of the Egba people, a major Yoruba sub-group based in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. The title “Alake” means “Lord of Ake,” referring to the historical Ake section of Abeokuta, where the Egba monarchy is based.

Current Alake of Egbaland

The present Alake of Egbaland is Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo III. He ascended the throne on August 2, 2005, following the passing of Oba Oyebade Lipede. Before becoming king, he served in the Nigerian Army and held various leadership roles.

Role and Significance

  • Traditional Leadership: The Alake is the head of all Egba kings (Obas) and plays a key role in maintaining cultural heritage.
  • Political and Social Influence: He engages in community development, conflict resolution, and governance advisory roles.
  • Promotion of Egba Heritage: The Alake actively promotes Yoruba culture, traditions, and history.
  • Guardian of Festivals: He presides over important festivals like the Lisabi Festival, which celebrates Egba history and unity.
