Richard Theodore Greener (January 30, 1844 – May 2, 1922) was a trailblazing African American scholar, diplomat, and lawyer.
Key Accomplishments
- First Black graduate of Harvard University (1870): Greener broke barriers by becoming the first African American to earn a degree from Harvard College.
- Educator & Administrator: He became a professor at the University of South Carolina and was the first Black faculty member there. He also served as the university librarian.
- Civil Rights Advocate & Lawyer: Greener was active in Reconstruction-era politics and fought for racial equality through law and education.
- Diplomatic Career: Later in life, he served as the U.S. Consul to Vladivostok, Russia, representing American interests abroad.
