Richard Theodore Greener (January 30, 1844 – May 2, 1922) was a trailblazing African American scholar, diplomat, and lawyer.

Key Accomplishments

  • First Black graduate of Harvard University (1870): Greener broke barriers by becoming the first African American to earn a degree from Harvard College.
  • Educator & Administrator: He became a professor at the University of South Carolina and was the first Black faculty member there. He also served as the university librarian.
  • Civil Rights Advocate & Lawyer: Greener was active in Reconstruction-era politics and fought for racial equality through law and education.
  • Diplomatic Career: Later in life, he served as the U.S. Consul to Vladivostok, Russia, representing American interests abroad.

Legacy

Greener’s work in education, law, and diplomacy helped pave the way for future generations of Black professionals. His Harvard diploma, once thought lost, was rediscovered in 2009, renewing interest in his incredible contributions to history.
