Richard Bowie Spikes (October 2, 1878 – January 22, 1963) was an African-American inventor whose innovations significantly influenced various industries, particularly automotive technology.

Early Life and Background

Born in San Francisco, California, Spikes was the fifth of nine children to Monroe Spikes Sr., a barber, and Medora Kirby Spikes. His family was musically inclined; two of his younger brothers, John Curry Spikes and Reb Spikes, were notable musicians and songwriters, with “Someday Sweetheart” being among their popular compositions. Richard himself was a skilled pianist and violinist.

Career and Inventions

Spikes held various professions, including barbering, teaching, and operating a saloon. His diverse career path provided him with practical insights that fueled his inventive endeavors. Among his notable inventions are:

  • Beer Tap (1908): Dissatisfied with existing methods of dispensing draft beer, Spikes developed an improved beer tap, which was patented and purchased by the Milwaukee Brewing Company. Variations of his design remain in use today.
  • Billiard Cue Rack (1910): He designed a specialized rack for billiard cues, enhancing the organization and accessibility of equipment in billiard halls.
  • Automobile Directional Signals (1913): Spikes patented an early version of turn signals for vehicles, contributing to automotive safety.
  • Improved Automatic Gear Shift (1932): He made significant modifications to the automatic gear shift mechanism, influencing the development of modern automatic transmissions.
  • Automatic Safety Brake System (1962): Spikes developed a braking system designed to enhance the safety of large vehicles like trucks and buses.

Challenges and Legacy

Later in life, Spikes faced glaucoma, leading to vision loss. Despite this, he continued his inventive work, demonstrating remarkable resilience and dedication. His contributions, particularly in automotive safety and efficiency, have had a lasting impact, underscoring the importance of diversity and innovation in technological advancement.
