History:

  • Pre-Colonial Era: Originally inhabited by the Taíno people, who called the island “Quisqueya” (Mother of All Lands) or “Ayiti” (Land of High Mountains).
  • European Discovery and Colonization:
    • Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492, establishing La Isabela, the first European settlement in the New World.
    • Santo Domingo was founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus (Christopher Columbus’ brother). It became the first permanent European colony in the Americas.

    • The island passed between Spanish and French control over the centuries.
    • It became a hub for European exploration and trade.

    • Gained independence from Haiti on February 27, 1844 after a 22-year occupation.
