Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) possesses a modest range of natural resources, which support its agriculture, tourism, and small-scale industries. While the country isn’t known for major mineral or fossil fuel reserves, it benefits from fertile land, rich biodiversity, and marine resources.

Natural Resources of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

1. Fertile Volcanic Soil

  • Result of past volcanic activity, especially from La Soufrière volcano.
  • Rich, dark soil supports agriculture, especially:
    • Bananas (historically the main export crop)
    • Root crops (dasheen, cassava, sweet potatoes)
    • Fruits (mangoes, breadfruit, passion fruit)
    • Spices and cocoa

2. Marine Resources

  • SVG has a large Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Caribbean Sea.
  • Rich in:
    • Fish species (tuna, snapper, mahi-mahi, lobster, conch)
    • Coral reefs (important for tourism and biodiversity)
    • Seaweed and coastal vegetation
  • Supports fishing, marine tourism, and small aquaculture operations.
