Marriage in Honduras

Marriage in Honduras can be civil, religious, or both, and traditions often blend modern law with cultural customs.

1. Legal Marriage Requirements (Civil Marriage)

  • Minimum age: 18 years old for both men and women
  • Persons aged 16–17 may marry with parental consent
  • Both partners must present:
    • Birth certificates
    • National ID or passport
    • Proof of being single (or divorce/death certificate if previously married)
  • Marriage must be registered with the Civil Registry

2. Religious Marriage

  • Roman Catholic and Evangelical ceremonies are common
  • Many couples have both a civil ceremony (legal) and a church ceremony (spiritual)
  • Religious marriage alone is not legally valid unless also registered with civil authorities

3. Wedding Traditions

  • Catholic weddings often feature a “arras” ceremony (groom gives bride 13 coins as a sign of prosperity and commitment)
  • Traditional Garífuna weddings include drumming, dancing, and community feasts
  • In rural areas, extended family and neighbors often participate in the celebration
  • Popular to serve local dishes such as tamales, roast pork, and pastries

4. Modern Trends

  • Urban couples often choose smaller, modern weddings
  • Destination weddings in Roatán and the Bay Islands are becoming popular with foreigners
  • Increasing number of civil-only marriages due to cost and convenience

5. International & Foreign Marriages

  • Foreigners can marry in Honduras, but must present translated and legalized documents
  • Marriages in Honduras are recognized internationally if properly registered
