Major Mountains in Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is a mountainous island in the eastern Caribbean, famous for its dramatic volcanic landscapes. The island’s peaks are not only scenic attractions but also rich in biodiversity, hiking trails, and cultural significance.


Major Mountains in Saint Lucia

1. Gros Piton

  • Height: ~798 meters (2,618 feet)
  • Location: Southwestern Saint Lucia, near Soufrière
  • Significance: One of the island’s iconic twin Pitons (volcanic plugs), part of the UNESCO-listed Pitons Management Area
  • Popular for: Hiking (guided trail available), photography, and eco-tourism

2. Petit Piton

  • Height: ~743 meters (2,438 feet)
  • Steeper and more rugged than Gros Piton
  • More challenging hike, not officially sanctioned for casual tourists
  • Also part of the Pitons World Heritage Site

3. Mount Gimie

  • Height: ~950 meters (3,117 feet) – Highest peak in Saint Lucia
  • Location: Central Saint Lucia, near the rainforest
  • Covered in lush tropical rainforest and home to rare wildlife
  • Less visited than the Pitons but ideal for adventurous hikers with guides

Other Notable Mountains and Ridges

  • Morne Fortune – Overlooks the capital Castries; historical significance with old military forts.
  • Morne Gimie Range – Encompasses dense forest and waterfalls.
  • Morne Coubaril – Near Soufrière; home to a heritage estate and ziplining.

Ecological Importance

Saint Lucia’s mountains:

  • Are key watersheds that support rivers and agriculture
  • Host endemic plants and animals
  • Offer protection from hurricanes and strong winds
  • Attract eco-tourists for hiking, birdwatching, and photography
