How to Become a Citizen or Resident of the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory, meaning its residents are considered British Overseas Territories Citizens (BOTC). However, full Caymanian status (local citizenship) is different from simply being a British citizen or legal resident.

Here’s a clear guide to the different modes of becoming a citizen or gaining status in the Cayman Islands:

1. Caymanian Status (“Local Citizenship”)

This is the most important legal status in the Cayman Islands. It gives a person full rights such as:

  • Unrestricted ability to live and work
  • Own property without limitations
  • Pass status to children
  • Participate in elections

You can obtain Caymanian status through:

a. Birth

  • Automatically granted if born in the Cayman Islands AND at least one parent has Caymanian status.

b. Descent

  • If you were born overseas, you can get status if one or both parents are Caymanian at the time of your birth.

c. Marriage to a Caymanian

  • After being married to a Caymanian for at least 7 years, you can apply for status.
  • Must have lived legally in the islands for most of that time.

d. Permanent Residency (see below) followed by Caymanian Status

  • Foreigners can apply for status after holding permanent residency for at least 8 years, depending on conditions met.

2. Permanent Residency (PR)

Allows you to live in the Cayman Islands long-term without having full Caymanian status.

Main paths to PR:

a. Points-Based Residency (via employment)

  • Must live legally in Cayman for at least 8 years
  • Apply before the 9th year of work-permit stay
  • Scored on:
    • Education
    • Local investment
    • Income level
    • Community involvement
    • Language skills
  • b. Residency by Investment
  • Buy real estate worth at least CI$1 million (US$1.2M), with CI$500,000 (US$600K) in developed property.
  • Pay annual fees and pass background checks
  • Grants 25-year renewable residency (not full Caymanian status)
  • Can lead to PR or status later

3. Residency Certificate for Retirees (50+ years)

  • For wealthy retirees looking to live in Cayman full- or part-time
  • Requirements:
    • Be over 50 years old
    • Invest CI$250,000+ (US$300K+) in real estate
    • Earn enough to sustain yourself (proof of income)
    • Can reside for up to 25 years

4. Work Permit (Temporary Residency)

  • Most foreigners first enter Cayman on employment contracts
  • Must have a work permit sponsored by an employer
  • Valid from 6 months to 3 years, renewable
  • After 8 years, workers can apply for PR or Caymanian Status (see above)

5. British Overseas Territories Citizenship (BOTC)

  • Residents who hold permanent residency can apply to become BOTC citizens through naturalization.
  • Benefits:
    • British Overseas Territories passport
    • Ability to live in other BOT territories
    • Can later apply for full British citizenship (UK passport)
  • Does not automatically give Caymanian Status
