Here’s an overview of basketball in Dominica, which is a growing but still secondary sport compared to football:

Basketball in Dominica

Basketball is a popular recreational and school sport in Dominica, especially in urban areas like Roseau. While not as prominent as football, it has a strong following among youth and amateur athletes.

1. Governing Body

Dominica Amateur Basketball Association (DABA)

  • Main organization overseeing basketball on the island.
  • Responsible for:
    • Organizing leagues and competitions.
    • Promoting grassroots development.
    • Selecting players for national teams.
  • Works in collaboration with FIBA Americas (Dominica is a FIBA member nation).

2. Domestic Competitions

DABA National League

  • Main local basketball league.
  • Features teams from across the island competing in:
    • Premier Division
    • Division I
    • U-17 and youth divisions

Popular Local Teams

  • Blazers
  • X-Men
  • Falcons
  • Hurricanes
  • Eagles
  • Signman Celtics

These teams compete mostly in the Roseau Indoor Stadium or other urban court venues.

3. Youth Development & School Sports

  • Basketball is included in school sports programs, particularly in high schools and colleges.
  • Inter-school tournaments are organized by the Ministry of Education and Sports.
  • Some top youth players have received scholarships to study and play abroad, particularly in the U.S. and Canada.

4. International Participation

  • Dominica has a national men’s and women’s team, but they rarely participate in major regional or international events due to funding and size.
  • Some involvement in:
    • Caribbean Basketball Championship (CBC)
    • FIBA 3×3 tournaments
  • The national teams are still in a developmental phase.

5. Facilities

  • Roseau Indoor Stadium – main venue for official games.
  • Outdoor community courts in towns like:
    • Portsmouth
    • Grand Bay
    • Marigot
  • Many schools have basic outdoor courts used for training and league play.

6. Challenges

  • Limited funding and sponsorship
  • Insufficient facilities for high-level competition
  • Minimal international exposure
  • Need for coach certification and training support

7. Future of Basketball in Dominica

  • Strong grassroots participation offers hope for growth.
  • Interest among youth continues to rise.
  • Support from FIBA Caribbean and regional programs may help improve:
    • Coach education
    • Equipment and court development
    • International opportunities
