Granville T. Woods (1856–1910)

Occupation: Inventor & Electrical Engineer
Nicknamed: The Black Edison — because of his groundbreaking electrical inventions.

1. Induction Telegraph System (1887)

  • Purpose: Allowed moving trains to communicate with train stations and with each other in real time.
  • This reduced collisions, improved train scheduling, and revolutionized railroad safety.

Woods’ invention worked by using electromagnetic induction—he figured out how to transmit messages wirelessly through the rails or air, decades before radio.

2. Other Key Inventions (Over 60 Patents!)

Here are just a few of his incredible contributions:

Automatic Safety CutoutProtected electrical circuits from overloads.

Fought for His Credit

  • Woods had to defend his patents multiple times—including against Thomas Edison himself.
  • He won the legal battle, securing recognition for his inventions.

Legacy & Recognition

  • Though largely unrecognized in his lifetime, Woods’ work laid the foundation for electrical transportation systems.
  • Honored posthumously with schools, parks, and science programs named in his memory.
  • Now considered a pioneer of modern communication and public transportation.
