The Federal Government says Section 1 of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway will be opened to the public between December 12 and 17.Minister of Works Dave Umahi announced the timeline on Sunday in Lagos after inspecting progress on the 47.47-kilometre, six-lane stretch.

“We also set aside April next year to have Section 1 and half of Section 2 fully completed and commissioned,” Umahi said, praising contractor Hitech Construction for completing more than 80 per cent of the reinforced concrete pavement. He added that unexpected soil conditions required deeper excavation in some areas. “If we are to pay for everything they have done, it would be very difficult… they are partners in progress for the development of the country.

Umahi confirmed that only three kilometres of sand filling remain between Ahmadu Bello Way and Eleko Junction.Lagos Controller of Works Olufemi Dare noted ongoing settlement issues around Chainage 33 but commended the contractor’s quality of work. “Sir, it may interest you to know that the standing building is the palace of this community, and you saved this building. They are extremely happy,” he said.Hitech Managing Director Dany Abboud said the company is “on track to deliver,” with dredging and backfilling continuing from Chainage 34 to Chainage 37.“We are monitoring settlement in the swampy areas and water bodies due to the change of alignment,” he added.
