Dotun Popoola, born on April 7, 1981, in Lagos, Nigeria, is a distinguished contemporary artist renowned for his synergetic metal sculptures. He specializes in transforming discarded scrap metals into hyper-realistic, monumental artworks, effectively turning “trash to treasures” and “waste to wealth.”

Educational Background

Dotun’s artistic journey began at Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State, Nigeria, where he earned a National Diploma in Painting and General Arts in 2004, graduating as the best student in his department. He furthered his education at Obafemi Awolowo University, obtaining both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Fine and Applied Arts, specializing in sculpture and painting, respectively.

Artistic Career and Philosophy

Dotun has carved a unique niche in the art world with his hyper-realistic monumental metal sculptures. His work is characterized by a commitment to environmental sustainability, focusing on repurposing waste materials that threaten the ecosystem. This philosophy underscores his mission to create luxury art from discarded materials, thereby adding value to what was once considered waste.

Exhibitions and International Presence

Throughout his career, Dotun has participated in numerous exhibitions, both locally and internationally. Notably, he represented Nigeria at the maiden Scrap Art Exhibition in Qatar in 2019 and at the Global Art Festival in Gujarat, India, in 2020. His works were also prominently featured at the Nigerian pavilion during Expo 2020 in Dubai, where his hybrid sculptures captivated a global audience.

Community Engagement and Mentorship

Beyond his personal artistic endeavors, Dotun is deeply committed to community service and mentorship. He facilitates art workshops for students, professionals, non-governmental organizations, healthcare institutions, orphanages, rehabilitation centers, and schools, both in Nigeria and abroad. His studio in southwestern Nigeria serves as a mentoring hub, providing professional development opportunities for both local and international artists.

Media Recognition

Dotun’s innovative approach to art and his contributions to environmental conservation have garnered significant media attention. His work has been featured in over 100 publications, including prominent international outlets like The New York Times and Al Jazeera, highlighting his role in redefining contemporary African art.
