Dominica currently does not have a standing military.

1. No Standing Army Since 1981

  • The Dominica Defence Force (DDF), established in 1975, was disbanded in March 1981 following two coup attempts—one led by its own commander, Major Frederick Newton—leading to the dissolution of the military by Parliament

2. Security Provided by Police and Coast Guard

  • Defense and security are now handled by the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force, which includes:
    • A Special Service Unit (SSU)
    • The Dominica Coast Guard
  • Under emergency conditions (e.g., war), the Police Force can assume military duties

3. Regional Defense Cooperation (RSS)

  • Dominica is a member of the Regional Security System (RSS), a Caribbean regional defense organization.
  • In case of major threats, RSS partners—such as Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, and others—provide military, maritime, and air support

4. No Conscription

  • There is no compulsory military service in Dominica, nor is it permitted under law

5. Historical Remnants

  • Dominica retains military-era heritage sites, such as Fort Shirley at Cabrits, built in the 18th century by the British and now part of a national park
