Belize has a rich and diverse food culture influenced by its Maya, Garifuna, Creole, Mestizo, and East Indian communities. The cuisine blends Caribbean, Latin American, and African flavors with local ingredients like seafood, corn, plantains, and rice. Here’s a breakdown of popular foods in Belize:


Staple Dishes

  1. Rice and Beans
    • Cooked with coconut milk and served with stewed chicken, beef, or pork.
    • National dish of Belize.
  2. Stew Chicken / Stew Beef / Stew Pork
    • Meat cooked in a rich brown gravy, often served with rice and beans.
  3. Boil Up
    • A Garifuna dish made with boiled eggs, plantains, yams, cassava, dumplings, and fish in tomato sauce.
  4. Tamales
    • Corn dough filled with meat or vegetables, wrapped in plantain leaves, and steamed.
  5. Panades
    • Fried corn tortillas stuffed with fish or beans, served with cabbage and onion sauce.

  1. Hudut
    • A Garifuna coconut fish stew served with mashed plantains.
  2. Conch Fritters
    • Deep-fried batter mixed with chopped conch (a type of shellfish).
  3. Fried Fish with Johnny Cakes
    • Crispy fried fish served with dense, biscuit-like bread.

Traditional Snacks
