Until now, getting there often meant a private boat, ferry schedules or complicated connections. With a nonstop flight from Miami, Bimini can now become a quick weekend getaway instead of a multi-stop island hop.“American knows that travelers are looking for unique and varied experiences, and that’s why we’ve added destinations like Bimini to our network,” Brian Znotins, American’s senior vice president of network planning, said in a statement.

Despite its proximity to the U.S., Bimini feels worlds away. The island is famous for its shockingly clear water, shallow sandbars and laid-back rhythm. Travelers love it for its world-class snorkeling, dolphin encounters, bonefishing and fresh conch salad. It’s also long been a magnet for famous visitors who sought it out for its privacy. Ernest Hemingway practically made Bimini his second home in the 1930s, and the island still evokes that same old-school, barefoot-cool energy that continues to draw in celebrities, yacht owners and high-profile travelers

American’s new service makes that escape far more accessible. Flights will operate three times a week—Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays—between Miami and Bimini, using Embraer 175 aircraft with premium cabin options. Travelers can connect through Miami from more than 80 cities across the U.S. and Canada, meaning Bimini is no longer reserved for South Florida insiders.

Once there, visitors can explore both North and South Bimini, hop between beachfront resorts and local seafood spots and spend days on the water—whether that’s snorkeling with tropical fish, big game fishing or just floating over some of the clearest shallows in the Bahamas.

The new route also deepens American’s already large presence in the Bahamas. Bimini becomes the airline’s seventh Bahamian destination—this winter American will operate more flights to the Bahamas than any other U.S. airline. In addition to being the only carrier offering nonstop service between the U.S. and Bimini, American is also the only major U.S. airline flying to Governor’s Harbour and Freeport, with added seasonal service to Marsh Harbour and North Eleuthera during peak travel periods.

For travelers who have always heard about Bimini—from fishing legends, old Hollywood stories or friends with boats—but never quite figured out how to get there, American’s new nonstop may finally make one of the Bahamas’ most quietly glamorous islands feel within reach.
