Early Life

  • Grew up in rural Nutbush, Tennessee, picking cotton as a child.
  • Sang in the church choir and discovered her love for performance early.
  • Moved to St. Louis in her teens, where she met Ike Turner, joining his band Kings of Rhythm.

Rise to Fame with Ike Turner

  • In 1960, released the hit “A Fool in Love” under the name Tina Turner.
  • Formed the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, one of the most electrifying live acts of the 1960s–70s.
  • Famous songs included “River Deep – Mountain High,” “Proud Mary” (Grammy-winning), and “Nutbush City Limits.”
  • Despite success, Tina endured years of abuse and control from Ike, finally leaving him in 1976 with only 36 cents and a gas station credit card.

Solo Career & Global Superstardom

  • Rebuilt her career in the late 1970s–1980s, starting almost from scratch.
  • Her 1984 album “Private Dancer” became a phenomenon.
    • Featured hits like “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” “Private Dancer,” and “Better Be Good to Me.”
    • Won 4 Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year.
  • Other hits: “We Don’t Need Another Hero” (Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome), “The Best,” “Typical Male,” “I Don’t Wanna Fight.”
  • Known for her powerful stage presence, raspy voice, and explosive energy.

Acting

  • Starred as the fierce Aunty Entity in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985).
  • Subject of the 1993 biopic “What’s Love Got to Do with It” (starring Angela Bassett), which chronicled her escape from abuse and rise to stardom.

  • 12 Grammy Awards (including Lifetime Achievement).
  • Over 100 million records sold worldwide.
  • Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (twice: with Ike in 1991, solo in 2021).

  • First Black woman and first female artist to cover Rolling Stone magazine.

  • Married German music executive Erwin Bach in 2013 after a long partnership.
  • Became a Swiss citizen in 2013.
  • Battled health issues in later years (stroke, kidney disease, intestinal cancer).
  • Passed away peacefully in Switzerland at 83 years old.
