The Netherlands Antilles—before its dissolution in 2010—included Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius. Today, these islands still share a similar labor market structure based on tourism, trade, and services.

Here are the most common jobs and employment sectors across the former Netherlands Antilles:

1. Tourism and Hospitality

This is the dominant sector in most of the islands, especially Curaçao, Sint Maarten, and Bonaire.

Common jobs:

  • Hotel staff (receptionists, cleaners, managers)
  • Tour guides
  • Bartenders and waiters
  • Dive instructors and boat operators
  • Travel agents

2. Construction and Skilled Trades

Due to ongoing tourism infrastructure projects and housing demand.

Common jobs:

  • Construction workers
  • Electricians
  • Plumbers
  • Carpenters
  • Heavy equipment operators

3. Public Sector & Government Services

Especially in the capitals like Willemstad (Curaçao) and Philipsburg (Sint Maarten).

Common jobs:

  • Civil servants
  • Teachers
  • Healthcare workers (nurses, doctors)
  • Police officers
  • Customs/immigration staff

4. Retail and Commerce

Trade and commerce are strong due to duty-free shopping (especially in Sint Maarten).

Common jobs:

  • Shop assistants
  • Cashiers
  • Import/export clerks
  • Merchandisers

5. Maritime & Port Services

Major ports in Curaçao and Sint Eustatius drive shipping-related employment.

Common jobs:

  • Dock workers
  • Port security
  • Ship maintenance and repair
  • Oil terminal staff (e.g., at Bullen Bay or Statia Terminal)

6. Services and Freelance

A growing sector, especially post-2010 with increased internet penetration.

Common jobs:

  • Freelance writers, designers, and developers
  • Call center agents
  • Remote virtual assistants
  • Tour booking operators

7. Oil Refining and Energy (Curaçao, Sint Eustatius)

Historically major employers, though now declining or under restructuring.

Common jobs:

  • Oil terminal workers
  • Maintenance technicians
  • Engineers

8. Fishing and Agriculture (Smaller scale)

Especially on islands like Saba and Sint Eustatius.

Common jobs:

  • Fishermen
  • Livestock caretakers
  • Small-scale farmers
