The Netherlands Antilles was a former constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, located in the Caribbean. It was dissolved on October 10, 2010. Here’s an overview:

Overview of the Netherlands Antilles

Status (before dissolution):

  • An autonomous Caribbean country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Capital:

  • Willemstad (on the island of Curaçao)

Main Islands:
The Netherlands Antilles originally included five islands, divided into two groups:

  • Leeward Islands (near Venezuela):
    • Curaçao
    • Bonaire
  • Windward Islands (closer to Puerto Rico):
    • Sint Maarten (southern half of the island shared with Saint-Martin)
    • Saba
    • Sint Eustatius

What Happened in 2010?

On October 10, 2010 (10-10-10), the Netherlands Antilles was officially dissolved. The islands gained new statuses:

  • Curaçao and Sint Maarten became autonomous countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands (like Aruba, which had separated in 1986).
  • Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba became special municipalities (public bodies) of the Netherlands itself, known collectively as the Caribbean Netherlands or BES islands.

Current Political Statuses

Sint MaartenAutonomous country (within the Kingdom)
BonaireSpecial municipality of the Netherlands

Sint EustatiusSpecial municipality of the Netherlands

Relationship with the Netherlands

All former Netherlands Antilles territories remain part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, sharing Dutch citizenship, but with varying degrees of autonomy.
