Overview of the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF)

The police force in The Bahamas is known as the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF). It is the country’s primary law enforcement agency, responsible for maintaining public order, preventing and investigating crimes, and ensuring national security.


Overview of the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF)

  • Founded: 1840
  • Motto: “Courage, Integrity, Loyalty”
  • Headquarters: Nassau, New Providence

Key Responsibilities

  • Crime prevention and investigation (including drug trafficking and violent crimes)
  • Traffic regulation and enforcement
  • Immigration and border security support
  • Emergency response and disaster management
  • Community policing and public education

Structure

The RBPF is led by a Commissioner of Police, supported by Deputy and Assistant Commissioners. It includes several divisions:

  • Criminal Investigations Department (CID)
  • Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU)
  • Marine Support Services (patrols coastal and maritime areas)
  • Tourism Police (focused on visitor safety in high-traffic tourist zones)
  • Traffic Division
  • K-9 Unit
  • Mobile Division (rapid response)

Specialized Units

  • Anti-Gang and Firearms Task Force
  • Cybercrime Unit
  • Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Unit

International Cooperation

  • Works closely with:
    • INTERPOL
    • U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
    • CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS)
    • Bahamas Customs and Immigration

Community Engagement

  • Operates neighborhood watch programs.
  • Conducts youth and anti-violence outreach.
  • Hosts the Police Cadet Corps to train future officers.

Challenges

  • Combatting gang violence and drug trafficking.
  • Managing crime in urban areas like Nassau.
  • Strengthening trust with communities through transparency and accountability.
