Becoming a citizen of South Sudan can happen through several legal pathways. Here’s a simple breakdown of how to acquire South Sudanese citizenship:

1. By Birth (Citizenship by Descent)

You are a citizen of South Sudan by birth if:

  • At least one of your parents or grandparents was born in South Sudan, or
  • You belong to one of the indigenous ethnic communities of South Sudan.

This is the most common form of citizenship, especially for those with South Sudanese heritage.

2. By Naturalization

If you’re not South Sudanese by birth, you can apply for citizenship by naturalization under these conditions:

Requirements:

  • Legally reside in South Sudan for at least 10 consecutive years.
  • Be of good character and not have a criminal record.
  • Have knowledge of local customs and traditions.
  • Be able to speak one of the indigenous languages or Juba Arabic.
  • Be willing to renounce any other citizenship, unless dual citizenship is allowed under special circumstances.

Process:

  • Submit an application to the Ministry of Interior or Directorate of Civil Registry, Nationality, Passports and Immigration.
  • Provide documents like a residence permit, passport, proof of employment or marriage, etc.
  • Pass background checks and interviews.

3. By Marriage

You can apply for South Sudanese citizenship if you:

  • Marry a South Sudanese citizen, and
  • Live in South Sudan for a specified period (usually around 5 years).
  • Show integration into South Sudanese society.

Note:

South Sudan does recognize dual citizenship, which means you can hold citizenship in another country alongside South Sudanese citizenship, but with conditions. For example, certain government or security positions may require only South Sudanese nationality.
