Dr. Tamia Potter made history as the first Black woman neurosurgery resident at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2023. Her achievement is especially significant given the historically low number of Black women in the field of neurosurgery across the United States.

Quick Facts About Dr. Tamia Potter:

  • Undergraduate: Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) — a prestigious HBCU.
  • Medical School: Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
  • Historic Milestone: First Black woman to be accepted into Vanderbilt’s neurosurgery residency program since its founding over 90 years ago.
  • Achieved this milestone during the 2023 Match Day, a national event where medical students learn where they will train as residents.

What She Stands For:

Dr. Potter is a passionate advocate for:

  • Diversity in medicine, particularly in neurosurgery.
  • Mentorship for underrepresented minorities in healthcare.
  • The importance of HBCUs in shaping successful professionals in elite fields.

Her journey has inspired thousands, especially young Black women pursuing careers in science and medicine.
