William Samoei Ruto, born on December 21, 1966, in Kamagut, Uasin Gishu County, Kenya, is the current President of the Republic of Kenya. He was sworn into office on September 13, 2022, after winning the presidential election held on August 9, 2022, on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, a principal party in the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

Early Life and Education

Ruto’s early life was marked by humble beginnings. He attended Kerotet Primary School and later joined Wareng Secondary School for his O-level education before proceeding to Kapsabet Boys High School for his A-levels. He then enrolled at the University of Nairobi, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany and Zoology. Ruto furthered his education by obtaining a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in Plant Ecology from the same institution.

Political Career

Ruto’s political journey began in the early 1990s when he became involved with the Youth for KANU ’92 (YK’92), a group that supported President Daniel arap Moi’s re-election campaign. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Eldoret North Constituency in 1997. Over the years, Ruto held various governmental positions, including:

  • Minister of Home Affairs (2002): Serving briefly before the 2002 general elections.
  • Minister of Agriculture (2008–2010): Overseeing agricultural policies and reforms.
  • Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (2010–2011): Focusing on advancements in higher education and technology sectors.

In 2013, Ruto was elected as the Deputy President of Kenya alongside President Uhuru Kenyatta, a position he held until 2022.

Presidency

As President, Ruto has focused on various initiatives, including economic reforms and infrastructure development. In January 2025, his administration sought alternative financing for the completion of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) after China ceased its infrastructure funding. Kenya initiated discussions with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to secure funds for extending the railway to connect with Uganda and South Sudan. This move underscores Ruto’s commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and economic growth.

Recent Developments

In 2024, Ruto’s administration faced significant challenges, including public discontent over economic policies and tax hikes aimed at managing Kenya’s substantial debt. Protests erupted, reflecting widespread frustration over declining public services and perceived political corruption. These events highlighted the complexities Ruto faces in balancing domestic needs with international financial obligations.

Personal Life

Ruto is married to Rachel Chebet, and together they have six children. He is known for his deep Christian faith and is a regular churchgoer. Beyond politics, Ruto has interests in agriculture and business, owning several farms and investments across the country.
