The Dibaba sisters from Ethiopia are an extraordinary family of long-distance runners, often referred to as the “fastest family on Earth.” They have collectively earned multiple Olympic and World Championship medals, breaking records and dominating global athletics for over two decades.


Meet the Dibaba Sisters:

1. Tirunesh Dibaba – “The Baby-Faced Destroyer”

  • 3x Olympic Gold Medalist (2008, 2012)
  • 3x Olympic Bronze Medalist
  • Multiple World Championship titles
  • First woman to win Olympic gold in both 5,000m and 10,000m
  • Held world records in 5,000m and 10,000m events

2. Ejegayehu Dibaba

  • Olympic Silver Medalist (10,000m at Athens 2004)
  • First of the sisters to win an Olympic medal
  • Known for consistent performance in both 5,000m and 10,000m

3. Genzebe Dibaba

  • World Champion in the 1500m (2015)
  • Holds the world indoor record in the 1500m, mile, 3,000m, and 5,000m
  • Olympic Silver Medalist (1500m, Rio 2016)
  • Known for her versatility across middle- and long-distance events

Family Legacy:

  • They are part of the Dibaba dynasty from Bekoji, Ethiopia, a town famous for producing elite runners.
  • Their cousin, Derartu Tulu, was the first Black African woman to win Olympic gold (10,000m in 1992).
  • The sisters were raised in a farming village with humble beginnings but trained with intense discipline from a young age.
