Meet Sarah Chikaodinaka Ogoke

Dual Career: Elite Athlete & Medical Doctor

Sarah Ogoke is a remarkable figure who excels in both professional basketball and medicine. Born on June 25, 1990, in The Bronx, New York, she holds both Nigerian and American citizenships and currently plays as a shooting guard for the Nigerian national team (D’Tigress) and club Ferroviário de Maputo.

She pursued her education in the U.S., earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology/Pre-medicine from Southern Polytechnic State University, and later attended the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, qualifying as a podiatric surgeon.

On the Court: A Legacy of Leadership and Title Wins

  • Ogoke’s international career began in 2011 when she joined D’Tigress at the All-Africa Games and AfroBasket Women’s Championship.
  • She helped lead Nigeria to an unprecedented five consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles (2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2025), making her the first African woman to accomplish this feat.
  • As captain of D’Tigress in 2023, she scored double digits in the final against Senegal, showcasing her leadership on the biggest stage.
  • Career stats are impressive: in the 2023 AfroBasket tournament, she averaged 6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game.

Her peers and the media often call her the “First Lady of AfroBasket.” Her grit, consistent performance, and grace as a nursing mother have made her a powerful role model.

Beyond the Court: Medicine & Advocacy

Professionally, Ogoke serves as a podiatric surgeon at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, where she cares for foot and ankle conditions.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, she leveraged her dual platform—sports and medicine—to educate and raise awareness on health safety through social media.
