Meet Armorion Smith

Armorion Smith is a defensive back for Michigan State University whose story extends far beyond the gridiron. After tragically losing his mother, he rose to become the head of his household—caring for his siblings while balancing his duties as a student and athlete.

  • Shared duties: His 19-year-old sister Aleion takes the lead when he’s at school or practice, and together they make sure their siblings are cared for
  • Daily life juggling: Smith wakes up before dawn to get his siblings ready, attends physical therapy for a shoulder injury, heads to football team meetings and classes—then returns home to another set of responsibilities
  • Community support: A GoFundMe campaign has raised significant funds to provide them with housing and stability, with contributions from the university community and an NIL deal with HAP CareSource
  • Wide support network: Friends of the family, fans of Michigan State (Spartan Nation), and teammates have rallied around Smith and his siblings, offering emotional and practical assistance

On the Field

  • Performance: As a defensive back at MSU, Smith has appeared in 23 collegiate games—12 at Cincinnati and 11 at Michigan State. He has recorded 26 career tackles, one interception, and one pass breakup
  • Recognition: He was nominated for the 2024 Capital One Orange Bowl–FWAA Courage Award, honoring athletes who display outstanding character and perseverance
  • Coach praise: Defensive coordinator Joe Rossi highlighted Smith’s intelligence and preparation: “Nobody studies the game more than him.” He commended Smith for knowing not just what to do, but why he does it—calling that the mark of a top player and thoughtful coach

  • Surprise on ‘Good Morning America’: In November 2024, Armorion and his younger brother Armond appeared on the show and received a $40,000 check to support their family, a trip to Disneyland, and a brand-new car—gifts that came as a heartwarming surprise
