George Weah is a celebrated Liberian figure renowned for his remarkable achievements in both professional football and national politics.

Football Career

Born on October 1, 1966, in Monrovia, Liberia, George Weah rose from humble beginnings to become one of Africa’s most illustrious footballers. His club career spanned several top teams:

  • Monaco (1988–1992)
  • Paris Saint-Germain (1992–1995)
  • AC Milan (1995–2000)
  • Brief periods with Chelsea, Manchester City, and Marseille

In 1995, Weah achieved a historic milestone by winning both the Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year, becoming the first—and to date, only—African to receive these honors. He was also named African Footballer of the Year in 1989 and 1995, and was recognized as African Player of the Century in 1996.

Despite his individual brilliance, Weah never played in a FIFA World Cup, as Liberia did not qualify during his tenure. Nonetheless, he earned 75 caps and scored 18 goals for the national team, often funding and coaching the squad himself.

Political Career

Following his retirement from football, Weah transitioned into politics:

  • 2005: Ran for President of Liberia but was defeated by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
  • 2011: Contested as a vice-presidential candidate; the ticket was unsuccessful.
  • 2014: Elected to the Liberian Senate.
  • 2017: Elected as the 25th President of Liberia, assuming office on January 22, 2018.
  • 2023: Lost the presidential election to Joseph Boakai.

Family and Legacy

George Weah’s legacy extends through his family:

  • Timothy Weah, his son, is a professional footballer who plays as a winger for Juventus and the United States national team. Notably, Tim scored in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, achieving a feat his father never did.
  • Weah is also the uncle of Kyle Duncan, a defender for the New York Red Bulls.
