General Michael E. Langley made history as the first Black four-star general in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was promoted to this rank on August 6, 2022, after serving for nearly four decades in the Marines.

  • Born: Shreveport, Louisiana
  • Education: University of Texas at Arlington
  • Commissioned: 1985
  • Key Roles:
    • Served in Afghanistan
    • Led Marine Forces Europe and Africa
    • Became Commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command and Marine Forces Northern Command

Significance:

Langley’s promotion was a major milestone in the Marine Corps’ 246-year history, which had never before had a Black four-star general. His leadership and career paved the way for greater diversity in the military
